Barloworld Power recently installed and commissioned two 2 500 kVA Cat 3516generators at Konkola North Copper Mine, a green field development in Zambia situated some 8km from the DRC border. These generators are the first in a series of units planned for installation once the mine is at full production and are designed to carry all the emergency systems in the event of a grid power failure. The first units synchronise via an 11kV overhead line and from there connect into the mine’s 11kV network.

Each generator system is housed in a 12mcontainer which was specially modified at Barloworld Power’s facility in Boksburg. Barloworld Power was responsible for the design, fabrication and installation of the turnkey solution for the mine with regards to emergency backup power, which involved synchronization, MV control, safeties and the bulk fuel system.
